Our Church

Founded in 1915 by Rev. Frank Moses in Hopewell, St. Mary Missionary Baptist Church has grown from a small wooden chapel into a multi-generational congregation rooted in faith, fellowship, and service. Early leaders such as Deacon Arthur Ingram, Sr. and Sister Emma George helped establish a legacy continued through long pastorates, including Rev. James Scantling (29 years) and Rev. Dr. Shafter E. Scott (25 years), Pastor Emeritus. St. Mary Missionary Baptist Church is now under the pastoral leadership of Pastor Claude Hall.

Under Rev. Dr. Scott, St. Mary expanded ministries, improved facilities, strengthened youth and outreach programs, launched a Food Bank partnership, retired its mortgage, and celebrated its centennial in 2015.

Over more than 110 years the church has developed educational facilities, enhanced worship through music and technology, supported missions, and adapted to changing needs—including virtual worship during the 2020 pandemic.

Rooted in biblical truth and sustained by generations of faithful members, St. Mary remains committed to spiritual growth, community service, and honoring its legacy. Join us as our history continues to unfold.
